Tuesday with Jo

A little hello from me…

Welcome to this week’s Skinn Therapy email. I hope you’re having a lovely week.

Why Your Skin Changes After 40

Hi everyone, welcome to this week’s Tuesdays with Jo.

Today I want to talk about something I hear all the time in the clinic.

Women will say to me:

“Jo, I haven’t changed anything, but my skin has completely changed.”

Maybe the moisturiser you’ve used forever suddenly isn’t enough.

Your skin might feel drier or more sensitive.

You might be noticing pigmentation, lines, changes in texture or that your skin just doesn’t have the same bounce or glow it used to have.

And yes — you’re probably right.

Your skin HAS changed.

And today I want to explain a little bit about why.

First, let’s talk about collagen.

We hear the word collagen everywhere now.

Collagen is one of the things that gives our skin its structure and firmness.

As we get older, our collagen production naturally declines.

So we can start noticing changes in firmness, fine lines and the general texture of our skin.

But this isn’t something that suddenly happens on your 40th birthday.

It’s a gradual process.

We’re simply getting to the stage where some of those changes become more visible.

The second thing is dryness.

A lot of women tell me:

“I’ve never had dry skin before — why do I have it now?”

As we age, our skin can produce less of its natural oils and the skin barrier can behave differently.

So something that worked beautifully for your skin five or ten years ago might not be giving it what it needs today.

And that’s really important.

We get very loyal to skincare.

“I’ve used this cream for 15 years!”

That’s great — but is it still right for your skin?

Then we have cell renewal.

Our skin is constantly renewing itself, but that process changes as we get older.

This can contribute to skin looking a little duller or texture becoming more noticeable.

And that’s often when people start exfoliating like mad!

Please don’t.

More isn’t always better.

We want to support the skin, not constantly attack it.

Another big one is pigmentation.

Sometimes pigmentation we’re seeing in our 40s isn’t because of something we’ve done recently.

We’re seeing the result of years of sun exposure.

Those holidays.

Sitting in the garden.

Driving.

All those little bits of UV exposure add up.

Which is one of the reasons you’ll hear me going on and on about SPF.

But here’s the part I really want you to remember.

Your skin doesn’t live separately from the rest of you.

Stress matters.

Sleep matters.

Nutrition matters.

Hormonal changes matter.

Hydration and lifestyle matter.

And we’re going to talk about all of these things over the next 12 weeks of Tuesdays with Jo.

Because I don’t just want to tell you what product to put on your face.

I want you to understand your skin.

Once you understand what’s happening, making decisions about skincare becomes so much easier.

So here’s your little challenge from me this week.

Go and look at your skin properly.

Not with the magnifying mirror looking for everything that’s wrong!

Just look at it and get curious.

What’s changed?

Is it drier?

More sensitive?

Are you noticing pigmentation?

Has the texture changed?

Or maybe it’s something completely different.

And then I want you to tell me.

Reply to this week’s Tuesdays with Jo email or message me and answer one question:

What’s the biggest change you’ve noticed in your skin over the last few years?

Because I want the next 12 weeks of Tuesdays with Jo to answer the things that YOU actually want to know..

JO’S RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Berry & Glow Protein Smoothie

A quick breakfast or afternoon pick-me-up to complement this week’s conversation about looking after changing skin from the inside as well as the outside.

You’ll need:

• 1 handful mixed berries • ½ banana • 1 scoop of your favourite protein powder • 1 tablespoon chia seeds • 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed • 200–250ml milk or unsweetened plant milk • 2 tablespoons Greek yoghurt • Small handful of spinach • Squeeze of fresh lemon or lime • Ice

You can add Skin Integrate 28 for your pre biotic

Simply blend everything together until smooth.

Why I’ve chosen it this week

Protein — gives your body amino acids needed for repair and maintenance.

Berries — a colourful source of vitamin C and other plant nutrients.

Vitamin C — contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin.

Chia & flaxseed — add fibre and unsaturated fats.

Greek yoghurt — adds extra protein and makes it beautifully creamy.

And don’t worry — you won’t taste the spinach!

Jo’s little reminder: Great skin isn’t created by one smoothie, one supplement or one expensive cream.

It’s the small things we do consistently — skincare, nutrition, movement, sleep, sun protection and looking after ourselves — that add up over time.
